The roadway to hell is paved with the cobblestones of good intentions.
This show starts off with the usual frilly, magical girls stuff.
A cute/kawaii little familiar that needs help to save people from the catalysts of despair . . .
Witches.
All they have to do is make a contract with the little familiar to become a magical girl . . .
. . . for risking their lives to fight the witches, they get a wish...
For the first two episodes it seems almost like the standard magical girl cartoon...
. . . with the occasional slap of reality to make the show interesting...
. . .and kind of "dark" psychologically...
You might be thinking that this could be good....
About the third episode, things get really dark...
This is about despair . . .
this is about depression . . .
this is about deceit...
All the magic is real but the reason for it is just a lie . . . a lie of omission...
The price the girls have to pay isn't just risking their lives to fight the witches . . .
. . . they loose their souls . . .
and eventually become their own worst enemy....
The little familiar isn't trying to save the world or even help the girls . . .
. . . in fact he will encourage them to fight with each-other just to gain the power he wants.
This is really a great show. It's mixture of post-modernist & surrealist production designs along with a slightly futuristic story/ timeline
make this a must see for those of you who like live-action shows like "Fringe", "Heroes" or the latest incarnation of "Star Trek."
There are a few spots where the show gets a bit smarmy and naive but it keeps coming up with ways to make you see
that, "it can always get worse."
Still . . .
. . . there is hope.
The fans at AniDB seem to think this is worth a 9 of 10, At ANN 8.7 of 10.
Personally,
9.5 of 10
this is a gem of a show.
This does remind me of the kind of story that Gainax would do...
In the end, Madoka is Christ . . .
. . . Mami is John the Baptist . . . Homura is Saul/Paul...
